Carly Ryan was a 15-year-old girl from South Australia who became a victim of online grooming and was tragically murdered in February 2007. Carly had been communicating with a man she believed to be a teenage boy on social networking sites for more than a year before her death.
The man, who was actually a 50-year-old man named Garry Francis Newman, lured Carly to a secluded beach where he attacked and killed her. The case brought international attention to the dangers of online predators and led to calls for greater regulation of social networking sites to protect young people.
Carly's mother, Sonya Ryan, has since become an advocate for online safety and founded the Carly Ryan Foundation to raise awareness about internet safety and provide support to victims of online grooming. Carly's tragic story serves as a reminder of the importance of being cautious and vigilant when interacting with others online.
